SB0008

This week, Governor Pritzker signed SB0008 into law.  This new law has a direct effect on gun owners in that

  1. Lost or stolen guns now need to be reported within 48 hours of discovery.  (Formerly, it was 72).
  2. Gun owners are now legally required to secure their firearms if they believe there is a minor, at-risk person, or prohibited person who may have access.  Civil penalties are listed at $10,000.

These changes will be effective January 1, 2026.

Important Safety Update Regarding the Sig P320/M17

At Firearm Mentor, our top priority is—and always will be—the safety of our students. We are committed to providing a training environment that is both secure and effective for all participants.

Due to ongoing discussions and growing reports of safety concerns regarding the Sig Sauer P320/M17 pistol, we have conducted a careful review of our safety policies. We are aware that several law enforcement and military organizations have recently chosen to restrict or ban the use of the P320 based on similar concerns.  This is temporary based on the outcome of the investigation, recent charges, and the outcome of those facts.

After thoroughly evaluating the available information, including incidents of unintentional discharges and feedback from the broader firearms community, we have made the difficult decision to prohibit the use of the Sig Sauer P320 in any live-fire training courses, effective immediately.  If a student qualifies for a maintenance lesson, we can still accomodate.

We understand that some students are familiar with and own this model. However, in keeping with our commitment to safety, we must take every reasonable step to eliminate even the slightest risk posed by equipment-related issues. This ensures we maintain the highest training standards and allows us to focus entirely on developing your skills in a safe environment.

We remain hopeful that Sig Sauer will address these concerns with a long-term solution. Should that occur, we will revisit our policy and consider reinstating the P320 for training use.

If you own a Sig Sauer P320 and are planning to attend a course, we kindly ask that you bring an approved alternative firearm. We’re happy to provide a suitable loaner or offer recommendations to help you find an appropriate option.  Often, there are firearms for sale on the private market that we are aware of.  Currently, there is a Kimber 1911 and a Ruger LCP-Max available.  If interested, we can facilitate an introduction.

If you have any questions or need assistance selecting a replacement firearm, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re here to support you.

We recognize this change may be inconvenient for some, and we sincerely apologize for any disruption it may cause. Nonetheless, we firmly believe this decision reflects our dedication to your safety and reinforces the high standards that define Firearm Mentor.

Thank you for your understanding and continued trust. We’re honored to help you build your skills as a responsible firearm owner.
