Did you hear about the latest U.S. Supreme Court decision involving firearms and drug users? In a unanimous 9-0 ruling, the Court limited the government's ability to automatically prohibit firearm ownership simply because someone uses marijuana. The Court emphasized that constitutional rights can't be taken away based solely on broad assumptions that every marijuana user is dangerous. Instead, the government must show evidence that a specific person poses a danger. Now, before anyone gets excited, this does NOT mean it's open season. Federal law, state law, and concealed carry regulations remain complex. The Court's decision was narrow and does not protect people who are intoxicated while armed, addicted to controlled substances, or otherwise dangerous. The bigger lesson?
