Can an 18-year-old now walk into a gun store and buy a handgun?

The answer is more complicated than some headlines suggest.

The U.S. Department of Justice recently concluded that the federal ban preventing licensed dealers from selling handguns to otherwise law-abiding adults ages 18 to 20 is unconstitutional and cannot be criminally enforced.

But that does not mean every 18-year-old can immediately purchase a handgun everywhere. State laws, FOID requirements, court developments, background checks, and individual dealer policies may still apply.

The lesson? Never rely on a headline or social media post when making a firearm decision. Check the current law where you live and speak with a qualified attorney when necessary.
