People keep telling me I need to look more tactical. So I went with… tactical squash. I’m Marcus Melnick with Firearm Mentor. Yes, I teach situational awareness. Yes, I voluntarily dressed as the most visible object in the neighborhood.” Concealment is clearly off the table. But here’s your Halloween safety tip: keep your eyes up, make sure your kids can see through their masks, and watch for drivers who are looking at their phones instead of your little monsters. The goal is to come home with candy and embarrassing pictures. I’ve already handled the embarrassing pictures. Visit FirearmMentor.com/classes. Like, follow, and share. Your house of worship has a plan for the service. Does it have a plan for an emergency? I’m Marcus Melnick with Firearm Mentor. A place where people gather to pray should feel welcoming. Preparing for an emergency helps protect that community. Before your next service, consider three questions: Do staff and volunteers know how to report a threat? Do congregants know the nearest exits, including one beyond the entrance they normally use? And is there a coordinated plan to help children, older adults, and people with disabilities? Security takes communication, preparation, and practice. One person with training cannot replace a coordinated team. Ask your leadership: ‘What’s our emergency plan, and when did we last practice it?’ Visit FirearmMentor.com for training information. Like, follow, and share this with someone who helps keep your congregation safe. Remain Safe. Stay Sharp. Train for the Moment that Matters. #FirearmMentor #HouseOfWorshipSafety #FaithCommunitySafety #EmergencyPreparedness #SituationalAwareness
A Firearm Mentor student helped eight people survive a mass shooting. Last summer, the student was pursuing his MBA and working as an intern in New York when a gunman entered his office building. Four people were shot. A lockdown alert went out. The shooter reached the floor below. The student acted. He gathered eight people in a women’s bathroom. With another person’s help, he pushed a couch against the door. Then he helped everyone stay calm and prepare to act together if their hiding place was breached. Fortunately, that never happened. About two hours later, a SWAT team escorted them safely out. The intern, the person with the least authority, became the leader. The Hero. We remember those who lost their lives. And we recognize the courage of those who helped others survive. This student remained safe, stayed sharp and trained for the moment that mattered. Preparation matters. Composure matters. A teacher fought back. A father intervened. Their courage deserves recognition. I’m Marcus Melnick with Firearm Mentor. At Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, police say a teacher threw her phone at an attacker, then tackled him and struggled for his weapon. An armed father entered the classroom and shot the attacker, ending the threat. Police credited their actions with preventing further loss of life. Three children and a teacher were killed. We mourn them, and our hearts are with their families, the injured, and everyone carrying the trauma of that day. We also honor two people who faced unimaginable danger to protect others. Their courage reminds us why emergency planning, sound judgment, and preparation matter. To that teacher and that father: your bravery deserves our gratitude. Having been in a thwarted mass shooting in the 1990s, and certified as an Active Shooter Response Instructor, we offer an inside look on how to survive mass shootings, as outlined in our book, “The Opposite of Safe.” Learn how to survive by taking a class at www.FirearmMentor.com/classes Remain Safe. Buying a handgun for your partner? Let them choose. A firearm that fits your hands and feels comfortable to you may be completely wrong for them. I’m Marcus Melnick with Firearm Mentor. Forget choosing by color or assuming smaller means easier. A smaller handgun can be harder to handle comfortably. Can your partner reach the controls? Operate it safely? Does it feel comfortable when they actually shoot it? Those answers matter more than your favorite brand. Make it an experience you share. Take a beginner class together and let them explore their preferences with instructor guidance. Support their decision without pressure. If you would like a buying guide for handguns, please request one at www.FirearmMentor.com/contact. We will send you one for free. Mike Ditka: Toughness, Leadership, and Responsibility Chicago lost a legend last week. Mike Ditka was more than the coach of the 1985 Chicago Bears. He represented toughness, discipline, accountability, and leadership. I’m Marcus Melnick from FirearmMentor.com and Bears fan. Don’t judge. Here’s something you might not know. In 2008, following the accidental shooting of NFL player Plaxico Burress, Ditka reportedly called for prohibiting NFL players from owning firearms. Whether you agree or disagree with that position, the incident reminds us of something important: firearm ownership comes with tremendous responsibility. At Firearm Mentor, we believe that responsibility begins with education, safe handling, sound judgment, and knowing the law. Coach Ditka left a remarkable legacy in Chicago and professional football. Rest in peace, Coach. Remain Safe. Stay Sharp. Train for the Moment that Matters. #MikeDitka #DaCoach #ChicagoBears #BearDown #FirearmMentor #FirearmSafety #ResponsibleGunOwnership #1985Bears
Illinois has a state bird, a state flower, and a state tree. But what if we picked a state firearm? Idaho voters will choose among six firearms this November to help select an official state gun. Something manufactured here? A historic military rifle? A classic revolver? Drop your choice in the comments, and tell me why it deserves the title. Can an 18-year-old now walk into a gun store and buy a handgun? The answer is more complicated than some headlines suggest. The U.S. Department of Justice recently concluded that the federal ban preventing licensed dealers from selling handguns to otherwise law-abiding adults ages 18 to 20 is unconstitutional and cannot be criminally enforced. But that does not mean every 18-year-old can immediately purchase a handgun everywhere. State laws, FOID requirements, court developments, background checks, and individual dealer policies may still apply. The lesson? Never rely on a headline or social media post when making a firearm decision. Check the current law where you live and speak with a qualified attorney when necessary.
