Can you defend yourself with a handgun while holding a baby? Physically, perhaps. Safely, it creates serious problems. Try this controlled, two-stage drill with a qualified instructor. Secure 15 to 20 pounds inside a training doll so nothing can shift or detach. Using an inert training firearm, carry the doll while moving toward cover. Practice calling 911, protecting the doll’s head, and placing it in a predetermined protected location. Only after the doll is safely down and completely behind the firing line should the live-fire portion begin. Practice carefully controlled, one-handed shooting under your instructor’s direction. Never fire while holding a real child, and do not hold the weighted doll during live fire. The lesson is simple: protect the child, create distance, find safety, and use a firearm only as a last resort. Are You Freaking Kidding Me? Episode 2 A firearm safety demonstration turned into a real-life lesson when a DEA agent accidentally discharged his handgun in front of a classroom. A badge, experience, or job title does not make anyone immune from a mistake. Before any demonstration, the firearm must be properly unloaded and verified clear. Keep your finger off the trigger, maintain a safe muzzle direction, and never allow confidence to replace discipline. Firearm safety rules apply to everyone, every time. Your concealed-carry license is not a police badge. It does not make you a law-enforcement officer, and it does not give you a duty to chase suspects, investigate suspicious activity, or intervene in every confrontation. If someone steals property and runs away, do not pursue them with a firearm. If a situation is unclear, create distance, become a good witness, and call 911. Introducing a firearm can escalate a confusing situation in seconds. Responsible concealed carriers are risk managers, not gunfighters. The goal is to protect life, avoid unnecessary confrontation, and return home safely. Sometimes, the most courageous decision is refusing to enter a fight that never required you. Stop buying a handgun simply because someone online said it was the best. Their hands are not your hands. A handgun that works perfectly for a reviewer may be uncomfortable or difficult for you to control. Can you reach the trigger properly? Operate the safety? Lock the slide open? Manage the recoil? Load the magazine without struggling? Reliability matters, but so do fit, comfort, and confidence. Before buying, handle several models and, whenever possible, shoot them. The best handgun is not necessarily the newest, smallest, or most expensive. It is one you can operate safely and accurately. See me at RMG Guns and Ammunition in Lake County to see which handguns fit your hand. I am there on Sunday afternoons. We also have classes listed at www.FirearmMentor.com/classes, including a class that allows you to shoot a variety of 9mm handguns for one flat price. What popular handgun just did not work for you? I have had a few over the years. #FirstTimeGunOwner #HandgunTips #ConcealedCarry #FirearmTraining #GunSafety #ResponsibleGunOwnership #TryBeforeYouBuy #FirearmMentor
What is the most important safety drill your family can practice without firing a single shot? Choose a family code word that means danger. Identify two possible exits from your home. Decide who gathers the children, who calls 911, and where everyone will meet once they are safe. Practice it calmly, during daylight, without a firearm. The objective is not to confront a threat. It is to move your family away from danger without confusion. A firearm may be part of your emergency plan, but communication, movement, and good decisions come first. Your family cannot follow a plan they have never practiced. Learn more at www.FirearmMentor.com. Remain Safe. Stay Sharp.
